Metro Vs Sydney Trains, Arrive the same time? Central to North Sydney

Today I decided to see how much faster Sydney Metro was then Sydney trains, So I got on the older legacy double-decker train at (Central) to (North Sydney) via the Sydney harbour Bridge, then returned using the Metro from (Victoria Cross North Sydney) to (Central) via the under water tunnel. Just to clarify time differences, Sydney trains sometimes tend to sit at north Sydney for a couple min...

      @@TallBoyGareth1The original plan was to demolish the MLC building. And then I think they would have extended that underground walkway all the way to Victoria Cross Metro from the North Sydney Train Station. But then they back flipped on that as the MLC building had a heritage order placed on it during the Metro construction. So the Greenwood Plaza underground walkway pops out at the same place still on Mount St near the MLC building right near where you filmed the circular fountains.

    Was this shot on a newer iPhone? I'm thinking with your footage you need to set adjust the 'colour space' to stop the overblown footage. I was up against this problem two years ago and unfortunately some editing programs struggle to understand the correct color space required to render a video correctly. The problem is related to what's known as HDR video. The magic about the exact same times can be seen on trip planners, yeah mind blowing

    • @TallBoyGareth1
      @TallBoyGareth1 8 днів тому

      iPhone 15 yeah, the HDR definitely makes the footage look bright

    • @leokimvideo
      @leokimvideo 7 днів тому

      @@TallBoyGareth1 It's a very common problem, and on sunny days the footage can be totally blown apart. Sadly it seems many editing platforms can't set the right colour settings to adjust the HDR video. And understanding the correct manual settings to adjust the footage isn't as simple as it should be.

    It is good to see that the signage at Victoria Cross still uses the Australian word "Lifts" and not the American word "Elevators". Covent Gardens tube station in London uses double sided lifts very effectively.

    This is the most favourable comparison scenario for the old trains. One of the main advantages of the metro is opening up journeys that were a lot more difficult before. I work in Martin Place, and met a friend last week in Crows Nest for lunch. I would never have been able to do that in decent time before. The big winners are people going from bus to Metro.

  • @trainstrains1
    @trainstrains1 11 днів тому

    An interesting comparison and thank you for showing it. I do wonder how the Metro will fare with peak hour crowds when they reduce the dwell times though. Peak hour commuters tend to be pretty single minded that they must board THIS train. Correspondingly, I wonder if the transferring of passenger numbers from ST to Metro will reduce dwell times on the existing City Underground. I think the only really fair comparison may be how both operate during the peak hour.

    • @kyletopfer7818
      @kyletopfer7818 10 днів тому

      That’s true but Metro just has so many more doors and is so much better at getting people packed in and moving through the train, metro can also run trains more often if needed to respond to spikes in demand.

    • @tacitdionysus3220
      @tacitdionysus3220 11 днів тому

      There's more buildings to be constructed between it and the existing high rises. You might have noticed the false wall near the Barangaroo pay gates. It's where the second entrance will open to connect the station with them. BTW, IMHO, it's not really 'nowhere' on the other side. The restoration of the headland. making it into a really great park, and commemorating Barangaroo the person, is the area's best feature, and far nicer than the sterile high rise end.

    • @kyletopfer7818
      @kyletopfer7818 10 днів тому

      @@tacitdionysus3220 yeah and that park will become more and more popular especially as more variety of food and activities move in at Barangaroo over the years it will become a fine station. It needs to have the old gasworks bridge rebuilt in a heritage style to give you fast access up to High Street and Kent Street from the metro station.

    • @tacitdionysus3220
      @tacitdionysus3220 10 днів тому

      The technical reason (as spoken about by one of the Sydney Metro dudes at the city extension opening) is that the line has to weave its way between other tunnels and basements in the city and get low enough to start the descent under the harbour. Apparently they would have preferred to have it closer to the ferries, but where it is the closet position the engineering allowed. Watch any of the numerous cab ride clips and you will notice how it turns hard one way then the other at a lower speed than normal between Barangaroo and Martin Place.

    • @kyletopfer7818
      @kyletopfer7818 10 днів тому

      @@tacitdionysus3220 yeah they were looking at a few options originally, they were either going to stay on the west side of the city from Barangaroo southwards down Sussex street, or go straight from Victoria X to a station near Circular Quay then Martin Place and Gadigal. In the end though they did a hybrid of the Barangaroo and Martin Place option. I don’t know what this means if they ever want to build a Northern Beaches Metro Tunnel, hopefully there is an alignment still available but they might have to reuse the Harbour bridge which was designed for 4 tracks but currently only has 2.

    Thats bad at the other end! Its not snakes you have to worry about nor faceplanting into a spider web. Its the Funnel Webs. The Blue Mountains has the tree dwelling species that can drop you from above(no joke). That light switch assembly and sesnor light hints at very recent activity in that tunnel. And I am also to see that old Lister still sitting there. It would've been a generator plant, most probably from the WWII by the design of the generator casing you looked at. Glad to know that work has been done on the tunnel though since your visit. It appears it will be 2025 before its open. Its likely most if not all of the 2.7 million given has been eaten in surveys and all that stuff. The council mentioned receiving two grants for further work. They still need to improve drainage and install lighting, amongst other stuff. Blue Mountains City Council must also work with Crown Lands NSW about plans for future use of the site. Knowing Australia, it will probably be 2027/28 at least before it actually opens.

    Town Hall station is a lot older than that - over 90 years, part of the last great project (set of projects!) to build Sydney, which was the City Circle and Harbour Bridge. Have you actually seen demand from the Northern Beaches though? There must be 4 or 5 other lines where the locals are begging for rail and deserve it first. Lanes 1 and 2 of the Harbour Bridge were originally intended for the Northern Beaches. But even JJ Bradfield couldn’t get them there. And that’s a man who knew how to get things done.
